The Wicked and Wonderful World of Roald Dahl

When I think back to my childhood, one of the best memories that I have is hiding under the bedclothes with a torch, trying to read Roald Dahl stories as quietly as possible. I loved them all, but my favourites were the magical tales of James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - followed closely by Danny the Champion of the World.  Roald Dahl takes your imagination on a ride and made you consider other possibilities and other worlds, which is the best thing a writer can ever achieve.

Truth is Stranger than Fiction - Roald Dahl Facts

Roald Dahl led a colourful life. You can read more about this in his autobiography, Boy.
  • Roald Dahl was extremely tall, reaching 6'6" (1.98m) at the peak of his adult life
  • The screenplay for the film, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was written by Roald Dahl and adapted from the book by Ian Fleming (creator of James Bond)
  • Three of Roald Dahl's favourite foods were chocolate, claret and onions (not together I presume!)
  • His granddaughter is the writer and model, Sophie Dahl. She was the inspiration for Sophie, the main character in The BFG.
  • He served in the British Royal Air Force during World War 2 and eventually became a Wing Commander.

Can you imagine how much fun he must've been as a grandfather?? :) Have a look at his page of favourite books growing up - http://www.infloox.com/person?id=6a5f6877 - has some excellent suggestions of books for younger boys.
